Initial Idea and Reasoning
The DocR Started life as just an engine. Seriously. Just an engine. The Long and short of it was that we had built a motor for a SBK 748 and found a new 996RS motor to replace it. When we built this motor, it was so amazing that when it was sitting in a crate I just felt bad that such an unreal thing was just sitting in a box. My good friend Dr. Roettinger came over one day and I said, "Lets build a bike around that motor." I had no idea what I was signing myself up for. Doc thought about it a bit and said, "why not."
The idea was simple. I always thought Ducati had missed the mark with the naked bikes. The monsters had always been 2 valve jobbies with a lot of go down low but nothing up top. When they finally put a 4valve motor in the Monster, it was a 916 with a lame ass transmission. I always wanted to see a naked bike with a high revving, low CC displacement, close ration transmission, proper sup and braking weighing in as low as possible.
Anyone who knows me can tell you I think the water cooled motors are the way to go and that 2valve air cooled units are cute and all, but I will take looking at a radiator and hoses anyday over low and fun and highend crap. What you see here is a very strange but an unreal combo, better then I ever expected to be honest.

Specifications
Frame: De-Uglied 996SBK Motor: 748, punched to 94MM with Pistal Pistons (853), no flywheel, Dyno'd at 110BHP@12.5K Tail: 1098 Choppedand modded. Swingarm: S4R Modified with Custom Axle, bearings and bushings. Wheels: S4R Fork: Showa DualSpeed Modified (now an Ohlins R&T with Billet Tripe, Pics to come) Rear Shock: ohlins from a 999 with a Custom Billet rocker. Gauge: motogadget Headlight: 60s Ducati Mach3/Bennilli NOS, Custom Surround, Hella Xenon. Tank: 748/996 SBK Tail cowl: Ducati Monster

Mockup of thoughts
Here you can see the rear subframe is still in Full 1098 form. The back 5 inches were cut off including the center support.
As you can see I really wanted the line of the subrame to run with the main frame.
Custom Machining
I ended up making a custom billet rocker as the SBK frame and the S4R shock placements are very different. I refused to cut the SBK frame to allow for the shock position so I offset it with a very complex billet unit.
A Below shot shows it a bit better. It is three Pieces, with and bearing offset. The bolts you see were just for setup.
Paint layout
Here the bike is pretty well together and I am trying to figure out the paint lines (sharpie). One of my other goals was for this machine to be very very skinny.
If you look carefully you can see my outline on the tank knee inserts here.
This angle shows one of the best parts of this bike. Usually you never see the main load bearing spars of the frame on these bikes on the left and right. When looking down this thing they stand out and you can look right through the bike.
Here you can tell I was stoked on the look of the tail but was very worried about how the exhaust might interfear.
This thing is very tall.
Breakdown and Paint
Setup done, the bike is broken down to head out to powder and paint at Miles@MotoFab in Vermont (the best I have found)
Miles and I went back and fourth on color. Every bear aluminum powder he showed me was to Blue/Metalic/Cold. Wanted something in the Bare sand blasted aluminum range, which has a strange yellow glow to it.
As you can see, Miles nailed. He coined the color as db-champaign-bright or something like that.
Build
Sure looks funny at these stages.
Not much there really. Here you can see what little room I had to hide the ECU, Battery, Powercommander and all the rest of the harness in. All of it is in the tail!

Initially Compete
Woodman found me the Can. I wanted a small, Single. One of my requirements on this thing was a 2-into-1. This is a Tyaga Maggot. It is GP style loud. Hurts even to think about. Love it.
Need I say more.
Lines Lines Lines.
When your next to this thing, it looks like the rider is sitting on a board.
One of the main advantages of the tubular single sided swing arm (other then the amazing style points) is that it is long. This bike hooks just run when falling in. Better then any SBK I have been on. I got lucky.

There is nothing to hide behind on this thing.
After about 30 Seconds you realize the radiator is not ugly at all.
It looks like it should have a voice.
Wait till you see the New Front end with Radials. Yikes!

This is the Doc. He is a hell of a guy and I was very happy to build this thing for him. He deserves it through and through. Nice work Doc!
Second Rebuild
Update The DocR was always going to get an Ohlins with Radials but man I never expected it to be so sick looking! We are also in the process or rewiring her and changing a few other things. Stay Tuned!
