This is an interesting one for me. First, let me state that I am very high energy and that I have put a lot of this energy toward my work all my life. While this has been a good thing it has also left a huge gap in my life (called personal time). I have started to change my thoughts on this matter but as per my usually I will try and leave my personal bias out of it.
When I look around I see a lot of people that are working mundane jobs that they either hate or don't really care for. They do this to support their personal interests (House,Kids, travel, hobbies so on) but what it really boils down to is money. The Root of all fucking evil (and power). I was extremely lucky at an early age to find a career that paid very well. This money started to consume me and all the physical things I could buy with it. I will touch on that in my Money Area of this site.
When I read about things that happened at the turn of the century in America, I am saddened that I was not there then. While we live in an amazing time today we have lost to much of our clarity and vision into why we work. What is it all for. Why do we do it. When America was new there was a reason to work hard, it was not just for you and yours it was for all of them. It was a collective effort toward the great american dream. That effort paid off and people lived well because of it, I live well because of it and you probably do as well but with it came a major loss over time. Respect for the collective, understanding of the reasons why. Today it is all about the self. That is the only thing I see driving people today. It is not for the collective it is for the self. How sad.
When we built the Panama canal, Hoover dam, The brooklyn bridge, sure there was personal gain but it was nowhere the majority in the reasoning to goto work everyday. It was a challenge. Uncharted territory if you will. America can do anything if they can do this. Think Pantheon in Rome, how unreal for its time.
Today, all I see are people interested in money. Money that is fake. The number one export in the US during the span of 2000-2010 was Financial services (aside from bullets of corse). Can someone tell me just what this is? No one can, not even the people thinking up the schemes. Because of this we have people that are brainwashed into not thinking about the social why but to think about the personal why. Don't think about who's money your stealing, think about what your going to spend it on once you get it.
Manufacturing is no longer maintainable in the US because we have decided we are better then that. "Let the Chinese do those jobs, we should be doing better things then that." Opps! There goes the middle class and without that we are fucked. Where am I going with all this? Even I don't know but let me rant for a few more minutes
If your young then you need to get off your ass and stop playing video games. Go out and get a job. Learn what it is like to have a boos, to have responsibility, to have money that your have earned either with your hands or with your time. While doing this, look around and see what part of the world of work you like and are interested in. Try a few of these areas and see if they are what they seem. If you find you have a area that you like then learn it to your best ability. If you need to goto school for it then do, get it done. Then go out and do the best you can before you buy a house or have family. If you want to teach then learn the area you intend to teach by going out and doing it for a duration.
Respect every job, even if you don't understand it. When you see a trash man/women, respect their job. You might think it is a crap job but little do you know that it is high paying, hard work, and everything in your life relies on the fact that those people goto work everyday. You are not better then they are. Same goes for service men and women, thank them for what they do because without them you would have to protect yourself and I can assure you that you will not last long.
There is no Free lunch and even if there is I promise you that you do not want to eat it. I know so many friends that are ruined by their money in that they lose focus and drive. While easy money can be looked at as a gift you must understand that it is a curse. When you have money you trust people less, you find that you don't have a place in the world because you have not had to work for it. You start to question your self in terms of self confidence. "What if I didn't have this money, would I be the person I am today?" Questioning of ones self is death by beheading and money always causes this if not earned by hard, honest work.
If your a parent, I might suggest you look back a 100 years when people didn't live long, had little to money and all the opportunity in the world. Kids went out and worked. Today, parents think giving their kids money is a better option then letting them go out and see the world and learn how hard it is. All your doing is insulating them to the point where when you are gone they are scared and unable to contribute to society. Get them out of the house. Turn off the TV, sell the video games. Nothing is better in the world then doing something with the money or object you have made with your efforts. If you have never experienced this then I feel very sorry for you but I hope that you will not let it happen to your offspring.
I suppose this writing really lends itself to the money topic but in ways it does not, being now.
We are humans. What are we doing these days. We are not hunting and gathering for our livelihood anymore. We are eating food from all corners of the world. We are communicating so much it is almost frightening. Why? What is our work going towards. The more and more the good people of science and medicine prolong our lives the more and more we have cancer to fight. We have become a smarter people because of this prolonged life (lack of churn makes us more educated) but with it comes a lower population that is more and more concerned with self then with the whole.
I find that daily I wonder why I do what I do. Why I goto work. Why when I get home I work more. When I write checks to my bills I wonder why. Why am I doing all this. Am I doing anything for the whole? It saddens me that I am not doing something for the whole. I have become a capitalist. I have fallen right in line with the general bloke that cares only for self.
I find myself looking forward to all the social structure failing. To the chaos what will issue when a global event puts everyone in their fucking seat. That reminds everyone that deep in their DNA they are something different. They are animals that survive. Evil, smart animals that are so capable it is scary. Everyone should know that it is never a matter of if but a matter of when. Do not live life thinking your perfect little box is the end all say all. It is out of your control and it will break. Be prepared. Allow your kids to be prepared. Learn, Teach, look, listen, think. Don't be shocked when it comes, be prepared.
Hard work will teach you all this. Get to work and think about the whole and not only the self.
